I ran across this rather interesting lecture on twitter, and thought i'd post it here.
The lecture covers the above topic title. Why you're best off Never, Ever, talking to the authorities.
If i'm being honest, its probably one of the most informative things on youtube i've seen in a long time.
Be warned, its not short.

What are your thoughts? Is the 5th amendment the cowards way out?

i didn't watch the vid, but i totally agree on your base arguement. usually cops are out to get people like me. i dont even have to have done something wrong.

True, I am always a cop magnet. They drive past my house day in and day out2 one even came in one day. Shit, that was scary!

Wait, you mean the cops that are tasked with protecting the public actually patrol the streets, and that takes them past your house on a regular basis? Well by god, you must be a mmagnet for them. I mean, they probably sit in their cars sipping there coffee and munching their doughnuts saying, "Hmm, how can we get this guy today". Cuz, you know, cops don't have anything better to do than to focus on one specific person.

Cody they probably smell the weed. Lol I think we all been there more than once. Well, a lot of us anyway.
It's been said when you're young you say "Oh shit!" when you hear a cop lives in your neighborhood. When you get a little older, you say, "Oh Great!" when you hear the same. I dunno, I must be right in the middle these days, quite past the oh shit stage, not yet to the oh great stage, more tacit indifference.

I didn't look at the video, but based on the posts, I must say it's a damn shame so many people have such an ignorant view of policemen.
they, like the rest of the employed world, are there to do a job. whether people believe it, or wanna acknowledge it, they, like the rest of the world, are doing the best they can with what they've got. this means that they won't always catch every bad guy, nor can some of the open cases they're dealing with, always go where society thinks they should.
this isn't do to the policemen not giving a shit, but a number of other things that people often don't take time to consider, such as the fact the evidence they have isn't enough to prove a given case, or the fact that a case that one person thinks should be top priority, actually can't be, due to the tremendous caseload they carry and the fact that some cases have to be bumped up due to the circumstances/need for them to be.

I must be an acception to that rrule leo. When I hear there's a cop in my neighborhood, I'm happy. I don't depend on them, but I'm glad to know they're ther. They've helped me out on more than a few occasions.

I think like all people, be it representatives, and people in general make mistakes. I think cops are their to protect and help us, not all cops are bad, not all loiers are lyers, just as talking to cops isn't necessarrilly a bad thing, unless one questions their presents for fear of one's awareness of what's going on.

I think police service members are some of the best people you will ever meet. They are doing what they are called to do.

The police aren't perfect, like anybody else. But whose the first person many people call when there's trouble? They deal with a lot of crap, I know that much. I'm glad they're around.

Chelsea, Don't lump me in with posts 2 and 3. I just found the lecture really interesting from both the lawyers and cops perspective. Its chock full of good info. posts 2 and 3 commenting with out even taking a ook at the video derailed this hole topic, not that it was getting views, anyway.

Well, I have got to hear that, just as soon as I find a good youtube to mp3 converter; its too large for youtube-mp3.org. Still, it sounds super-intriguing.

Post 13 by Meglet (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 07-May-2013 22:28:24

How big is it? Zamzar will do up to 100 mb, and I believe there's another, video2mp3.net or some such, which doesn't have a stated file size limit, if you can stand the bloody popups it generates. There are also a couple of pieces of software that will do it, though I can't speak for their accessibility.

sorry, it is quite long.
Its very worth it though.
A law professor breaks down all the legal reasons its not a good idea to talk to the authorities, for every reason. Its very detailed, and covers things you honestly wouldn't think of.
then, a police officer has his say, and you may be surprised just what he chooses to admit on camera.

James, considering I said nothing to you in my earlier post, there's no reason for you to think I'm lumping you in with those who directly displayed piss poor attitudes about policemen.

I will check out the article when I have some more time. People usually say, don't judge a book by its cover, but I believe simply, it seems a bit drastic to say that you should never trust talking to the police. They have some idiots, but what profession doesn't? I agree with what someone else said above, they tend to put up with a lot of crap from people, and I feel safe assuming they aren't often thanked. I understand, if you get stopped for j-walking, and end up getting fined, you probably won't say, "thank you sir, for penalizing me for something that I could have gotten hurt or killed doing." But think of this senario. Let's say a cop stops you for j-walking and gives you a ticket, fine, whatever. Angry, you mumble something or say something like, "I hope you have a miserable day", something like that. Then, you hear in the news that night that the same cop was killed on duty. What would you think about that? Maybe some of you wouldn't care, maybe some would take time to think. What I'm trying to say is don't let a few jerks make you conclude with a stereotype. After all, you wouldn't like it if someone did that about the blind, would you?
